The New Characters: I honestly didn't give a crap about Morel, Knuckle, and Knov. It made Gon's angst and the near-fatal coma he went into entirely pointless. I think the only character who mattered that got reincarnated into an Ant was Kite, but I feel like bringing him back was a cop out. Where were Pokkle and Ponzu's Chimera Ant forms? Who were Meruem, Pouf, Youpi, and Pitou in their past lives? This was a detail that I could have done without. The Selective Reincarnation into Chimera Ants: Some of the Chimera Ants get their memories from their past lives back, except when they don't. When pedophilia is not a factor, why not bestiality and possibly necrophilia? Chimera Ants are made of the devoured corpses of humans and multiple animals. Even Japan's Age of Consent isn't that low. Komugi has to be 18 at the oldest, and Meruem is only a month old by the end of the arc. That's not the only reason their relationship is creepy. Yes, fall for the guy who said over and over again that he'll kill you once he beats you in Gungi.

Next, the Stockholm Syndrome being in full effect. For starters, the Love Redeems cliche? Really? And the reason he fell in love with Komugi? Because she keeps beating him at a board game and for some reason understands the genocidal sociopath. The Attempt to Humanize Meruem: This is an issue that I feel needed a separate rant. Are there other Chimera Ant Queens? If so, where are they? Are all female Chimera Ants queens? If so, why does Meruem let his female soldiers fight on the front lines? Okay, how are you going to manage that, genius? The only known Chimera Ant Queen died giving birth to him. So, he wants to turn the humans into Chimera Ants. war and mass genocide are wrong? Kira Yamamoto would facepalm at that hypocrisy. He wants to cause a war and mass genocide to show that. Meruem is a Shit Villain: First off, his motive is weak. I swear, it's like I'm watching an episode of "Peppa Pig." You don't have to point this out for the fiftieth time. I know Knuckle's Stand can take Nen points. The flow of the battles near the end would come to a screeching halt so that the narrator can point out what anybody with eyes can see. The Narrations: Good fuck, the narrations. However, nothing kills the pacing more than my next. What was even the point of that? This arc dragged on for a good 120+ chapters, and it took seven years to finish because that was when the hiatuses started getting frequent. The Ants they fought weren't really all that important, and the Troupe is gone for the rest of the arc. The most blatant example was when the Phantom Troupe fought the Chimera Ants. The Pacing: You could have cut the fights between Kite's death and the confrontation with the Chimera Ant Royal Guard, and nothing important would be missed. And I get that Anger is a stage of grief, but did Gon have to threaten to murder an innocent girl just to fight Pitou? There's the Anger Stage, and then there's being completely out of character. Gon's Angst: I get that Kite inspired him to be a Hunter, but relating to my last point, when you get right down to it, Gon only knew him for a total of a few days.

What Togashi should have done was wait until much later in the arc to off him. While Kite was an important character for Gon's backstory, he seemed to serve the role of the Sacrificial Lamb of the arc. Wasting Characters That Weren't Developed: Hey, remember at the end of the Hunter Exam when Pokkle talked about him hanging out with Gon's gang? Yeah, let's never follow up on that by unceremoniously killing him and Ponzu. I seem to be a minority on this, but I feel like the Chimera Ant arc wasn't the Ben Hur of Shonen people make it out to be.
